Description
Pack your lunches and wear your comfy clothes, campers, we’re going on a mitten adventure! Your camp counselor, Mel, will guide you through knitting mittens from simple to luxurious using one pattern with multiple options. The pattern (included with your class registration) has a choice of seven sizes to fit small children to adults, and options for two ribbing styles, open or closed hand, open or closed thumb, and multiple yarn options from basic to luxurious. Once you knit a pair, you’ll want to knit s’more!
Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Successful students will already be comfortable knitting small circumferences in the round. The mitten hand can be knitted on dpns, magic loop, two circulars, Flexi Flips, etc. The thumb is easiest to knit on dpns. I strongly recommend taking the intro to dpns class or practicing knitting small circumferences prior to class if this is a new skill!
Mitten sizes: Finished mitten circumference: 5.5 (6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5) inches [14 (15.25, 16.5, 17.75, 19, 20.25, 21.6) cm] unstretched, after wet blocking.
For optimal fit, choose a finished circumference about ½ inch (1.25 cm) less than actual hand circumference for a fingerless (open top) mitten, or a finished circumference equal to or about a half inch larger than actual hand circumference for a regular (closed top) mitten.
Supplies (not included in class fee, purchase separately – 10% off in store!): If you have never knitted mittens, I recommend knitting your first pair using yarn from the “nice and simple” section below. Once you have knitted a pair then have fun with the other options. Please choose a light or medium color yarn for learning purposes!
Yarn options:
Nice and simple:
Light worsted weight yarn such as Cascade 220, Cascade 220 Superwash, Woolstok Worsted, Berocco Vintage, Juniper Moon Farms Herriot, Cascade Woolpaka, or similar
A little less basic:
Add stripes as desired using the yarn above in different colors. One skein of main color for the ribbing plus coordinating mini skeins looks great!
Fun and funky:
Two strands of fingering weight sock yarn held together.
Luxurious and toasty:
Pick a yarn from the “simple” list and combine it with a mohair and silk lace weight yarn such as Rowan Kidsilk Haze, Cascade Kid Seta, or similar.
Estimated yardage requirements:
For a single strand of yarn, you will need about 95 (95, 115, 135, 160, 185, 210) yd [86 (86, 105, 123, 145, 168, 191 m] for a pair of mittens with a closed top and closed thumb. For an open top and open thumb, you will need less.
For two strands held together, you will need about 95 (95, 115, 135, 160, 185, 210) yd [86 (86, 105, 123, 145, 168, 191m] of each yarn. For an open top and open thumb, you will need less.
